I want to start off by introducing myself. My name is Rich Ruelas and I began my teaching career in Arizona, where I taught for three years. I graduated from Western Michigan University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree, having majored in Physical Education and minored in Health Education. I have a wonderful wife, Alexia, who teaches Art in the Traverse City Area Public Schools. Aside from teaching, I enjoy coaching, traveling, technology, and being active. This is my third year at Glen Lake and I am looking forward to another great year!
Beliefs and Philosophy
I believe that regular physical activity contributes to good health, function, and well-being and is important throughout a person's lifetime. Most learners learn through psychomotor ("hands on" movement) applications; this is the basis for physical education. Being physically active is as important for the health and well-being of an individual as breathing clean air, eating nutritious food, drinking clean water, and getting enough sleep. In fact, our bodies were genetically designed to move. When people sit for an extended period of time (e.g. lecture), their brains disengage and learning stops. In addition, I believe that it is the responsibility of the adults in our society to create healthy environments in our homes, communities, and schools in order for children to reach their full potential and live a quality life. My mission as a teacher is to help every student pursue a healthy and active lifestyle. I strive to provide a positive learning experience so my students will be healthy and active outside of school. By providing developmentally appropriate instruction, students will acquire knowledge, personal/social attributes and skills necessary to live a long and healthy life. Personally, I try to "practice what I preach" by role modeling a healthy and active lifestyle. I feel it is critical that a child understands the importance of being healthy; a healthy child has far better chances of succeeding in school while living a quality life.
